Silappadikaram has been dated to likely belong to the beginning of Common era. Poompuhar,Tamil Nadu where most of the action of Silappadikaram takes place has been found off the sea and it has been proved that the people of Poompuhar had extensive trade with the Greeks, among others.Īnd now Poompuhar has been dated some 20,000 years back!Īs Silappadikaram speaks of Thiruvananthapuram and Anantha Padmanabhaswamy temple, these two should have existed before the events narrated in Silapadikaram.Īs Poompuhar is dated 20,000 years ago, it is reasonable to state that Thiruvananthapuram and Padmanabhaswamy temple date back to 20,000 years. Same description is found in the Puranas. Silappadikaram describes the city as golden city and the temple as one which was made of gold. The Tamil epic Silappadikarama, written by Ilangao Adigal, brother of the Chera king mentions this temple and also details the Thiruvananthapuram temple. However the temple and the city has been dated to around late first century BC. What is now Kerala was a part of Tamil Chera Kingdom.Ĭhera kings also enriches the temple and this dynasty goes back to thousands of years. This temple is referred to in the Puranas and Tamil Classics of the Sangam era.
